KEYTROLLER Access--Monitoring--Ignition control for cranes

8-1-10

Advanced Options

OSHA has issued new regulations addressing the safety of cranes in the construction industry. The rule, which has been in the works for a number of years, mandates that employers in the construction industry take the following steps:

  1. Assess whether the ground is sufficient to support anticipated weight of hoisting equipment and loads;
  2. Assess hazards within the work zone that would affect the safe operation of hoisting equipment, such as those of power lines and objects or personnel that would be within the work zone or swing radius of the hoisting equipment; and
  3. Ensure that the equipment is in safe operating condition via required inspections and mandate that employees in the work zone are trained to recognize hazards associated with the use of the equipment and any related duties that they are assigned to perform.

According to a fact sheet, the significant requirements in this new rule include: a pre-erection inspection of tower crane parts; use of synthetic slings in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions during assembly/disassembly work; assessment of ground conditions; qualification or certification of crane operators; and procedures for working in the vicinity of power lines. The rule also provides a functional description and list of examples of equipment covered by the rule. Other changes, as explained in the fact sheet, include:

  • Employers must comply with local/state operator licensing requirements+ criteria specified in § 1926.1427.
  • Employers must pay for certification or qualification of their currently uncertified or unqualified operators.
  • Written certification tests may be administered in any language understood by the operator candidate.
  • When employers with employees qualified for power transmission and distribution are working in accordance with the power transmission and distribution standard (§ 1910.269), that employer will be considered in compliance with this final rule's requirements for working around power lines.
  • Employers must use a qualified rigger for rigging operations during assembly/disassembly.
  • Employers must perform a pre-erection inspection of tower cranes.

The K E Y T ROL L E R LCD requires the operator to be trained and authorized (or his code or RFID card would not enable the device). The crane's ignition key can be eliminated and the machine is started and stopped directly from the keypad. Keytroller logs when the operator started the machine and if it is the first start of the shift---requires him to complete a customizable daily checklist. All checklist items are electronically logged in the device. Items like the following can be programmed:

  • Check Tires
  • Check Engine
  • Oil Check
  • Hydraulic Oil Check
  • Brakes Check
  • Transmission Fluid
  • Rigging up?
  • Radio operational?
  • Rotation OK?
  • Hook up OK?
  • Boom angle indicator OK?

The device can also be scheduled for the next required inspection and for the driver's expiration date when his recurrent training is again required. Additionally maintenance can be scheduled by a date or hour meter reading. Wireless long and short range radios can easily be plugged into the device's serial port to communicate with a PC or laptop below. All event log data can be wirelessly transmitted and event log data filtered and graphed using the PC software. From log in/out driver usage data, work time can easily be established for accurate payment for labor.

Pricing starts at $850 and demos are available to qualified equipment dealers and end users nationwide and Canada.

The SMARTER provides immediate video proof of an accident occurrence, and documents the happenings prior and post the incident as well. The device is a forward and rearward looking video recorder, and continuously records digital video whenever the ignition is on, then overwrites the oldest video when the memory card is full. In addition, the device records individual video events triggered by impact, fast acceleration or fast deceleration (heavy breaking). Events are time/date stamped, and records between 1-3 minutes before, and 1-3 minutes after the event is triggered. For further accuracy, there is an IR (infrared) illuminator for capturing the inside of the driver's cabin at night, and audio can be recorder as well.

As of Jan 26, 2010, it is now illegal for truck and bus drivers who travel interstate roadways to use a handheld device to send text messages. According to the U.S. Transportation Secretary, Ray LaHood, the new law which is supported by the trucking and bus industry, charges violators up to $2,750 in fines. Currently (as of 5/2010), 25 individual states have completely banned texting while driving while most states are seriously considering the same action.

  • Twenty-eight percent of traffic accidents occur when people talk on cell phones or send text messages while driving, according to a 2010 study by the National Safety Council.
  • Drivers that use cell phones are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves (NHTSA, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety).
  • On-the-job crashes cost employers over $24,500 per crash, $150,000 per injury, and $3.6 million per fatality (NHTSA, "The Economic Burden of Traffic Crashes on Employers DOT HS 809 682," National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).
  • Driving while distracted is a factor in 25% of police reported crashes.
  • Driving while using a cell phone reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37% (Carnegie Mellon).
  • Virginia Tech Transportation Institute concluded that people who send text messages while driving are 23 times more likely to be in a crash (or what they call a near-crash event) than non distracted drivers.
  • More than 500,000 people were injured and nearly 6,000 people were killed last year in motor-vehicle accidents involving a driver who was distracted while using a cell phone or texting device, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

CYBERWIRE WiFiR

6-1-09

Advanced Options

KEYTROLLER, LLC. announces the release of a new CYBERWIRE WiFiR (802.11) wireless radio for communication between it's LCD monitoring system and a WiFi a/b/g LAN network.

The KEYTROLLER LCD is an RFID enabled access and monitoring device popular with forklifts and other industrial equipment. More and more industrial customers today have employed a LAN wireless network in their plants. Keytroller's new CYBERWIRE WiFiR radio allows direct communication for downloading event log data, programming the device and sending text messages directly to the machine from the host PC within the facility.

The WiFiR allows equipment to move or "roam" between several APs (access points) within the facility. Equipment event log data is transmitted directly to WiFi access points in the ceiling which directs the data through the hard wired network and the KEYPATROLLER client server communication software where it is filtered, graphed and evaluated.

The new WiFiR has embedded configuration firmware built in to assist the installer— programmer. The WiFiR is WEB configured using built in Ethernet or WLAN connection. Secure data access is assured with WEP, WPA or WPA2 encryption.

This wireless option eliminates the intensive labor in finding vehicles in the plant and performing uploads or downloads. KEYPATROLLER software continuously scans for vehicles within range of any AP in the facility and automatically downloads data as it is available. Model: WiFiR

Installation of the WiFiR is simple----just plugs into the LCD unit's RS232 serial port so it can be retrofitted to any existing KEYTROLLER LCD monitoring device.

Keytroller, LLC. introduces the brand new Genie Card

06-16-2009

Advanced Options

Keytroller, LLC. introduces the brand new Genie Card wireless automatic RFIC card ignition enabler. This pro-active device prevents equipment from theft "hot wiring." The hidden wireless relay MUST be enabled (by Genie Card) in order to start the equipment.

If a thief tries to "hot wire" the ignition key, then the engine will simply NOT start. If someone tries to use a "good key" to start the vehicle, then the engine will still NOT start. A thief would have to find the wireless relay hidden in the ignition, starter or fuel pump circuit and circumvent it. Multiple wireless relays in different circuits can be enabled by the same Genie Card for even higher security.

The Genie Card works thanks to a very secure and fail-proof system: A wireless relay is installed hidden within the ignition, starter or fuel pump circuit. The system has a battery powered RFID Genie Card, which is smaller than a credit card, that pairs to the relay. Once the driver walks in range (10'-30'-set-able) the device automatically enables. The authorized driver is then able to start the equipment with his key. When the authorized driver turns off the engine and walks out of range, the wireless relay disables, therefore protecting the equipment from theft. An LED on the dash board signals transmission interruptions or low battery of the card. In addition, the device has an override emergency PIN code for managers.

The reliable Genie Card can join the company's popular KISS system for automatic ignition enabling and for the lock/unlock of doors (see KISS literature).

Overload Sensor for KEYTROLLER

12-1-08

Advanced Options

Keytroller introduces a new option for it's popular KEYTROLLER and KISS monitoring devices---a hydraulic overload sensor.

Forklifts can be overloaded very easily because operators frequently "guess" how much weight they are picking up. If the operator overloads the vehicle, he puts himself and his co-workers in a very dangerous, often life threatening condition. The new hydraulic overload sensor is mounted in the hydraulic pressure line between the forklift's mast and the hydraulic control valve in the operator's compartment. Once mounted, the forklift picks up a load that represents---THE FULL CAPACITY---of the forklift (if it is a 5000# capacity lift truck, the device is calibrated with 5000# load). With this load lifted 1' off the ground, the hydraulic sensor's dial is turned until the sensor outputs a signal. This signal represents an overload condition—the hydraulic pressure with a full capacity load on board.

This output is connected to an auxiliary input on the KEYTROLLER or KISS devices. This will flash the WARNING LED on the KEYTROLLER units—alerting the driver he is in an overload condition. If the auxiliary input continues to be received for a preset # of minutes (settable 0---10) then when it reaches the limit, it will shut down the KEYTROLLER device and the engine on the forklift---protecting it from potential damage and abuse.

Additionally, the event is recorded in the KEYTROLLER event log that can be review by management and discussed with the operator. The overload sensor can be retrofitted to any KEYTROLLER device already in use.

Start-Smart demo

11-15-08

Advanced Options

KEYTROLLER is now shipping table top demos of its popular STARTSMART devices to qualified construction equipment dealers. The demo display is designed to sit on a parts countertop exposing it to mechanics and equipment end users. Additionally the display can aid a salesperson to present a working model to his customer.

To qualify for a "free" demo display, the dealer must agree to purchase a minimum of 5 units within the first 6 months. An aggressive equipment dealership can do very well selling the device because of the multitude of applications.

START-SMART fits to any make or model construction machine, forklift, aerial lift, personel carrier, compressor or generator. It is designed for tough outdoor weather and has been tested under extreme conditions including: waterproofness, high voltage spikes, impacts, vibration, high and low temperatures, temperature thermal crash and salt spray. The device's metal piezo keypad is completely sealed and has NO moving parts and the keypad's 5 year warranty is a testament to it's reliability.

START-SMART units eliminate keys and keep untrained and unauthorized operators from starting the machine. The device starts/stops the engine directly from the keypad after entering an accepted code or presenting optional RFID card (choose standard 125khz or HID-Prox type) from a trained operator.

Operation is simple, just input code or flash a programmed RFID card and the device illuminates green LEDs if accepted. You then press START button to start engine and STOP button to stop the engine.

The device can be upgraded to log usage events and monitor engine, speed and impacts making operators accountable for abusive driving habits. There is also a wireless relay anti-theft option that prevents the vehicle from being "hot wired".

Speed-Saver EL

11-14-08

Advanced Options

Keytroller introduces SPEED-SAVER EL "N" series device to control top speed electronically on new generation "fly by wire" forklifts with electronic throttles. It is designed as an "plug and play" fit, so installation is faster and easier than older generation SPEED-SAVER devices that controlled top speed by mechanically by restricting the stroke of the throttle.

Many new generation forklifts come with speed sensors already on the vehicle. This reduces the cost and installation time of the SPEED-SAVER EL because the speed signal is simply taken from the speed sensor already in place.

In addition to the adjustable limit speed, the SPEED-SAVER EL can also assist in reducing the rate of acceleration (Slew Rate) available to the operator. This is useful for safer handling of fragile loads.

How it works:

The Control Unit is designed to operate with throttle pedal units which use two potentiometers. These will either operate such that the analog signal from each maps the other, i.e. as one output increases with throttle depression so will the other, or they operate so that the analog signals operate in an opposite orientation (Reverse), i.e. as one output increases with throttle depression, the other will decrease. The manual will identify how the 'Chan B' parameter is to be set, along with some guidance parameter settings for the model of fork truck. The 'I gain' and 'P gain' terms determine the overall damping of the limiter, they should be optimized to prevent the truck's speed, at limit, either hunting or the controller being slow to respond to changes to the slope of the floor where the truck is operating. Parameters are set using a calibrator supplied with the device and a connection to a computer's HyperTerminal.

At the order stage, Keytroller will verify that the fly-by-wire speed limiter will function with the truck make and model identified. Currently, Toyota, Nissan, Cat, Mitsubushi, Clark and Doosan forklifts can be fitted with this device. To facilitate fitting, the SPEED-SAVER EL has a number of custom harnesses for many of these forklifts.

SPEED-SAVER EL is available from equipment dealers nationwide and Canada.

Vanguard from Keytroller

4-29-08

Advanced Options

Keytroller introduces new VANGUARD (World's most accurate hydraulic forklift scale) designed to provide accuracy to within .2% of the rated load (within 10# in 5,000# load).

VANGUARD achieves this amazingly high accuracy by utilizing a hydraulic bypass manifold module which is mounted behind the mast on the forklift's firewall. Hydraulic fluid (under pressure from the load) bypasses through the module where the pressure sensor reads about 150 pressure values in 5 seconds as the load slowly lowers about 20". These pressure readings are averaged by the device and most of the pressure errors are removed or significantly reduced. (Convention single pressure reading scales are subject to considerable error from—valve opening/closing technique, tilt, lift height, bearing hang-ups, etc.)

The economical and simple VANGUARD system's accuracy compares very favorably to load cell and carriage scales which are typically at least twice the price. Additionally, since this is a hydraulic scale, it is far away from abuse taken by forks and carriages and can be used tough, high usage applications.

The VANGUARD system will also log weighing events in up to 99 different channels with up to 99 different weighing events per channel. The device is standard with a RS232 serial port for exporting event log data and printing adhesive or receipt labels. All events can be recorded in Lbs or Kgs and are time and date stamped with the accurate weight in chronological sequence or channel sequence.

Accurate weights assure correct payments to scrap sellers and reduces overage charges to shippers who have accurate weight logs of their loads.

CYBERWATCH

The device is simple to install with connection to vehicle power and the ignition system to establish time on (hour meter) usage data.

CYBERWATCH transmits its GPS position and hour meter data automatically once (per day or week) to a password protected website that is accessed by the dealer or user. From this data, the dealer can determine the exact position of its mobile asset and with hour meter information determine when that vehicle should be scheduled for maintenance.

CYBERWATCH has a magnetic switch that a mechanic "swipes" to create a "maintenance complete" event that is sent immediately. This event adds accountability to the mechanic and automatically resets the maintenance due graph on the website. Graphic interface easily show mechanic dispatcher which forklifts are due, past due and not due for maintenance. The device also includes a built-in "Geo Fence" anti theft feature, which is programmed to trigger an alarm report when vehicle motion is sensed.

Easy Justification:

Tire-Saver

11-1-06

Advanced Options

KEYTROLLER's TIRE-SAVER device is designed to protect transmission abuse and significantly improve tire life on forklift and other industrial vehicles.

The device kit consists of:

  • Controller module
  • Gear tooth speed sensor
  • Connection wire harness to connect to engine alternator
  • Connection wire harness to connect to directional solenoids

The TIRE-SAVER will prevent directional change from taking place if:

  • The travel speed is above what is set in the controller
  • The engine RPM is above what is set in the controller

When an operator tries to reverse direction when speed or RPM is above the setpoints, the TIRE-SAVER will NOT allow the directional change to take place and the vehicle will continue in the same direction----forcing the operator to brake until speed/RPM is reduced.

Customers report up to a 400% increase in tire life because the tires are not reversing and burning to slow the machine. Additionally the vehicle mass is not being transferred to the transmission---significantly improving transmission life.

The device will fit to any internal combustion vehicle with electrically actuated directional control.

Keytroller LCD

10-31-05

Advanced Options

KEYTROLLER, INC. announces the release of new features on their forklift and equipment safety device; the KEYTROLLER LCD keyless ignition-Model 501 blue-backlit LCD screen and RFID card enabling.

OSHA regulations require checklists be completed at the start of every shift. Now you can automate this checklist with the KEYTROLLER LCD. The LCD screen shows the operator programmable items (daily, weekly and monthly) that he must check pass or fail. Flagged items that are failed must be cleared by a supervisor or mechanic.

The LCD screen also allows an operator to view all settings and a supervisor immediate access to recent events like shock/abuse, speeding, over temperature, oil pressure, "sleeper", maintenance due, hour meter, speed % limit, and operator name.

This new Model 501 is a comprehensive monitoring system for equipment. The system prevents untrained operators from starting the vehicle, makes abusive operators accountable for speeding and damage, monitors engine conditions and shuts down engine as programmed.

Units equipped with GPS option allow memory of location coordinates on a timed programmed basis. When later downloaded, location events can be exported to mapping software for historical record of vehicle movement. Event downloading with filtering and graphing can be accomplished wirelessly or by direct connection to RS232 serial port. CYBERKEY data transfer option can download multiple vehicles with just one data key.

Installation is simple and can be done on any internal combustion or electric vehicle. KEYTROLLER LCD is available through qualified forklift and equipment dealers.

Tire-Saver N series

Advanced Options

KEYTROLLER's TIRE-SAVER new "N" series device is now quick fit-- "plug and play"-- for new model Toyota, Cat, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Doosan, and Komatsu lift trucks. It will install in minutes, allowing salesmen to demonstrate the effectiveness of the device to their customers quite easily. Older existing model TIRE-SAVERs will fit to any other model gas, LPG, or diesel lift trucks with electrically actuated directional control.

TIRE-SAVER prevents all transmission abuse and significantly improves tire life on forklifts and other industrial vehicles by NOT ALLOWING DIRECTIONAL CHANGE--- if the vehicle speed or engine RPM is above the setpoint.

How it works: When an operator tries to reverse vehicle direction when speed or engine RPM is above the setpoints, the TIRE-SAVER will NOT allow the directional change to take place and the vehicle will continue in the same direction as if it were in neutral. This forces the operator to brake until speed/RPM is reduced below the setpoints ---then direction change is allowed.

Customers report up to a 400% increase in tire life because the tires are not reversing and burning to slow the machine. That is like getting 4 tires for every one you buy!!! Additionally the vehicle mass is not being transferred to the transmission---significantly improving transmission life. This is a huge benefit to high cycle forklift users and can make a dealer's lift truck much more attractive to an end user who is burning up tires and transmissions.

Since many new series lift trucks already have a speed sensor----simply plug into this speed sensor connection ----and the cost of the device and installation time is reduced. Both controllers connect to vehicle management connection at the right side of the transmission. Alternators with tack lead connections make installation event simpler, if there is no tack lead for RPM input, one must be added to the alternator at installation.

The new N series device kit consists of:

  • Controller module to set speed and engine RPM threshold
  • Controller module to "fool" vehicle management system computer
  • Connection wire harness to connect to engine alternator
  • Connection wire harness to connect to directional solenoids
